Established in 1967, the Department of Mathematics has consistently been one of the most distinguished and high-profile departments at the College. Since its founding, the department has remained dedicated to academic excellence and continuous innovation. Over the years, 10 prominent faculty members have retired after contributing significantly to the department’s growth and legacy. Currently, a highly qualified team of three permanent faculty members, all of whom hold Ph.D. degrees, lead the department in its academic and research pursuits.
The department maintains an exceptional track record, with a consistent pass rate of over 95% every year, along with students securing top university ranks and earning S and A Plus grades. Recognizing the evolving demands of the industry and higher education landscape, the department launched a cutting-edge program in 2026: B.Sc. Mathematics (Hons) with Specialisation in Data Science and Actuarial Science. This program is designed to equip students with industry-relevant skills in data analytics, statistical modeling, risk assessment, and predictive analysis, significantly enhancing their employability and career prospects.
The introduction of this specialization has opened new avenues for students in high-demand sectors such as IT, finance, insurance, analytics, and consulting. Graduates from this program are well-prepared for roles including data analysts, actuaries, business analysts, risk managers, and quantitative researchers. The curriculum integrates theoretical mathematics with practical applications using tools like Python, R, SQL, Power BI, and Advanced Excel, ensuring students are job-ready upon graduation. The department also facilitates industry interactions, internships, and placement support, resulting in improved placement outcomes with competitive salary packages.
The Department of Mathematics is proud of its vibrant alumni network, with many alumni excelling in diverse fields including academia, corporate sectors, data science, and financial services. The department places special emphasis on the holistic development of students by nurturing analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and quantitative reasoning skills, alongside fostering leadership and effective communication in mathematical contexts. These efforts have resulted in numerous achievements, with students frequently winning competitions at both the state and national levels, making it a center of excellence in both academic and co-curricular arenas.
