Established in 1964 as a Junior college the Zoology department launched B. Sc Zoology Course in 1967. The department was upgraded as Post graduate department in 1981 offering M. Sc Zoology Course with Environmental Science as special paper. The Department has a rich legacy of academic excellence and scientific inquiry. Over the decades, it has evolved from a foundational undergraduate center into a research department. The department was upgraded as PG and Research Department in 2021. It stands as a beacon of academic excellence and scientific discovery. Since its upgrade to a full-fledged research center, the department has made significant strides in biodiversity studies. Our research initiatives have led to the discovery and documentation of new faunal species, contributing vital data to the global scientific community and enhancing environmental conservation efforts.
The department has a robust academic infrastructure powered by prestigious national funding from DST-FIST, DBT-STAR and DST-CURIE. Its advanced, well-equipped laboratories serve as experimental hubs where students engage in high-impact research, molecular diagnostics, and biochemical analysis using modern instruments. Complementing these practical spaces is a comprehensive Zoological Museum, which houses an extensive collection of animal specimens, skeletal models and preserved fauna. This museum acts as a learning resource, bridging classroom theory with taxonomic reality.
