PHYSICAL EDUCATION

The Department of Physical Education has a creditable record of achievements in the field of sports and games. Established in 1964, the department has contributed significantly to the sporting excellence of the college over the years. The college has produced many outstanding sportswomen, including Olympians and Arjuna Awardees.

Smt. Sumathy S. Nair served as the Head of the Department from the beginning until her retirement in 1991. Smt. Mercy Joseph joined the department as an Assistant Professor and retired in 2005 as the Head of the Department. Dr. Thankachan Mathew served the department until 2023 as the Head of the Department. All the teachers have been dedicated and sincere in promoting the development of sports in the college. At present, Dr. Sini Thomas is the Head of the Department.

The college has been proud to nurture several distinguished athletes and sportspersons, including Smt. Shiny Wilson, Padmini Thomas, Preeja Sreedharan, Sini Jose, Aleykutty Joseph, Jasmine George, Sumy Cyriac, Soney Cyriac, Rosmi Bose, and Bindu S.R., who have brought laurels to the country in international athletics, volleyball, swimming, and related disciplines.

The college also has strong teams in Athletics, Volleyball, Basketball, Swimming, Cross Country, Powerlifting, Weightlifting, Netball, Kho-Kho, Handball, and Gymnastics, reflecting its strong sports culture and commitment to physical fitness, teamwork, and competitive excellence.
