Ever since its inception, Alphonsa College has been able to secure a unique place on the athletic map of Kerala. The College had the good fortune to nurture and bring to the limelight many star performers in the field of athletics. Smt. K.M. Celine, Preeja Sreedharan (G.V.Raja Award winners), Olympian Padmashree Shiny Wilson, Padmini Thomas (both Arjuna Awardees) and several others after them had their basic training on the grounds of Alphonsa. They took part in many inter-university, national and international tournaments and brought home medals and trophies galore. During the earlier years international volleyball players like Aleykutty Joseph, Reji Antony, Daisy Thomas, Jasmine George and Sreedevi P. R. were students of this institution.
In the present generation, this illustrious tradition is being upheld by Asha Sebastian, Ajitha Madhavan and K.S. Bijimol trained under Malayala Manorama Talent Scheme, the Thoppil sisters- Sumi, Soumi, Somi and Soni- the queens of the aquatic world who have broken many existing records, Preeja Sreedharan (G. V. Raja Awardee) who took part in five international tournaments, A. Vigila, the only Malayalee athlete who took part in the Asian Junior Athletic meet held in Malaysia, Dhanya Purushothaman who broke the record of the 100 mts. event set by Smt. P. T. Usha at the Junior (under 22 years) State Athletic Championship, Sini Jose who represented India in the Beijing Olympics – the list goes on. It is a matter of pride that Alphonsa College won the Mahatma Gandhi University Athletic Championship consecutively from 1999 to 2003. The College team was selected as the best athletic team in the state in 2001, 2002 and 2003.
The college won the Championship in swimming from the very beginning till date. A number of students represented the University in All India Inter-university championships and were members of the state team in National championships. Over the years the college has continued to win a number of laurels in the field of sports. The college teams won the Mahatma Gandhi University Championships in Athletics and Swimming. The credit of these unparalleled achievements goes to the Physical Education teachers like Mrs. Sumathy S. Nair (Rtd), Mrs. Mercy Joseph (Rtd), Sri. Thankachen Mathew, Ms. Nisha Philip and the coaches. Under their efficient guidance and coaching, Alphonsa has made a giant leap forward as a sporting power.
Sri.Thankachen Mathew was selected as the Indian Coach for the first Asian Indore Athletic Championship held in Tehran in February 2004. He also participated in the C.E.C.S. Level II Course on Sprint and Hurdles in Jakarta organised by the International Association of Athletic Federations Regional Development Centre in July 2004 and was selected as the coach for the Indian University team for the World University Championship held at Bangkok in August 2007.
Our alumna Olympian Sini Jose represented India and won the Gold Medal in 4x400mts Relay during the Commonwealth Games at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi October 12, 2010. Olympian Sini Jose represented India and won the Gold Medal in 4x400mts Relay at South Asian Athletics Championship 2008. She got the first prize in 400mts, 200mts and 4x400mts Relay at the M G University Inter-collegiate Athletic Championship. The college team won and secured gold in the All India Inter-University Cross Country Championship 2008 held at Hariyana. In the academic year 2008-09 our college won the following Championships: M G University Cross Country $ Athletic Championship M G University Weight Lifting Championship M G University Kho-Kho Championship M G University Swimming Championship Third position in the M G University Wrestling $ Basketball Championship Runners up in the M G University Power Lifting Championship The college team won the second prize at the All Kerala Inter-Collegiate Basketball Championship, 2007 held at St. Albert`s College, Ernakulam. The team included: Dhanya A. of IIIDC History, Shenu Chandy of IIIDC Economics, Binny Rajan of IIDC Economics, Remya S. of IIIDC Economics, Remya P.V. of IIDC History, Jyothi N.J. of IIIDC History, Anna Merin Chacko of II DC History Anjumol Mathew of II DC History, Tinu Joy of I DC Economics and Christeena Mariam of I DC Economics. Sini Jose of III DC English was a member of the 4×400 m relay team which won the gold medal at the Asian Athletic Championship held at Jordan in August 2007. At the All Kerala Handball Championship, 2007 held at St. Cyrils College, Adoor, the college team won the championship. The team consisted Shymol P.S. of I M.A.Politics, Mintu Murali of I DC English, Neethu Rani S. of I DC Zoology, Jomy Joseph of III DC History, Anju Thomas of II DC Economics, Renju K.Thankappan of I MA Politics, Josna Abraham of I MA Politics and Thanu Mathew of I DC English. The college team won the second prize at the All Kerala Inter-Collegiate Volleyball Championship, 2007 held at Assumption College, Changanacherry. The college was represented by Babitha K. of III DC Economics, Sheeba P.K. of III DC History, Surya P. of II DC English, Shyna N.N. of II DC Economics, Mary Debata of II DC Economics, Deepa V. of II DC English, Julina Joseph of II DC English, Bijitha Vincent of II DC English, Vineetha T.V. of I DC History, Sivya Vijayan of I DC History, Neethu Ravi S. of I DC English and Sonia George of I DC History. Sini Jose of III DC English represented India in the World Athletic Meet held at Osaka, Japan. At the All India Inter University Athletic Championship held at Bangalore Ms.Saranya A.K. of III DC History won the first place in 100m hurdles. Ms. Beevi Rajan of III DC Economics and Ms.Jyothi E.S. of III DC English won the second place in 4x100m relay; and Ms.Anju Mathew of I DC Zoology and Ms.Sini Jose of II DC English won the first place in the 4x400m relay. Thankachan Mathew, Head of the Department of Physical Education was selected as the coach for the Indian University team for the World University Championship held at Bangkok from 9 to 20 August 2007. Jyothy E.S. of III DC English and Ms.Beevi Rajan of III DC Economics won the second position in the 4x100m relay at the National Games held at Assam. The college team won the third place at the Inter Collegiate Kho-Kho Championship held at Kottyam. Priyamol Divakaran of II MA Politics, Ms.Sheeba P.K. of II DC History and Ms. Jeena George of II DC English were members of the Mahatma Gandhi University team which won the second position at the All India Inter-university Volleyball Championship held at Kottayam in January 2007.
